Feels Like Home

Monday night, Sigma Kappa alumnae joined our Zeta Mu lovelies for a conversation workshop to prep for recruitment. We had a great time getting to know our collegiate sisters. The collegians and Darlene have put a lot of hard work into prepping for the big event this weekend and they are going to rock it! They asked our alumnae panel some questions that certainly made me reach into the corners of my brain to recall my own recruitment. I was so excited after I left; I called one of my dear friends from the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter to revel in recruitment memories (and to brag about our Zeta Mu girls!).

Going into preference night as a potential new member, I was really confused about which house I was going to choose as my #1. All three houses were fantastic and I loved each one throughout the four previous days of recruitment. At the Sigma Kappa party, I was greeted warmly at the door by Rae, an alumna who was poised, graceful and embodied the type of woman I hoped to become one day. I sat at a table with Jamie and had true sister-like conversation that came without any awkwardness. We were served a sparkling punch in champagne flutes with frozen fruit to garnish. Towards the end of the party I had a lone grape sitting in the bottom of the glass. Jaime smiled and said, as if reading my mind, “I know you want to eat the grape in bottom. Just reach in and get it”. So we both reached in and pulled out the fruit from the bottom of our glasses and laughed. It’s an odd thing, very unlady-like and I don’t recommend it as a recruitment tactic- but that is when I knew Sigma Kappa was the place I was going to feel the most comfortable, the most at home.

This weekend, our collegiate sisters and potential new members will be making recruitment memories of their own. I wish them all the best and hope everyone finds the place they feel at home. What are some of your favorite recruitment memories? Leave a comment; I’d love to hear them…..
Love, C

My favorite recruitment memory was also as a potential new member entering Sigma Kappa's doors. I was greeted by my now heart sis, Judy with a warm smile and a hug. She sat me down at our table and I saw the lavender 7-up in a champagne flute with my name on it!! The preference ceremony was 2nd to none with special speakers (one of whom became my big sis) who truly spoke from the heart. I knew at that moment that it wasn't about choosing the popular, or blonde sorority, or wearing the most expensive clothes. I had found the sorority where they enjoyed and accepted me for who I was, and who I am as a person. I am FOREVER grateful for that!
