First and foremost I want to thank you all for the honor of serving as our alumnae chapter delegate at Sigma Kappa’s 85th National Convention in The Woodlands, Texas. It was my first convention and truly an amazing experience. Did I drink the purple kool-aid for five days straight? You bet I did! There is nothing quite like being surrounded by Sigma Kappa women from all over the world to encourage inspiration and motivation. I certainly returned with both. We kicked it off with a welcome reception where my collegiate chapter, Theta Omicron, was recognized with other recolonized chapters. It was an exciting and emotional moment for me along with my Theta Omicron sisters both old and new. On day two after a long day of meetings, collegiates and advisors from Zeta Mu, Theta Omicron and Zeta Omicron grabbed dinner together. It was a wonderful meal full of swapped stories and ideas. I loved being able to share my Theta Omicron world with our Zeta Mu girls. The Sigma Kappa Foundation Ultra Violet Event was so much fun! Our trivia knowledge was put to the test. La Jolla alumnae were well represented with our five attending members wearing our much adored chapter t-shirt. We were fortunate to have some entertainment by Former National President, Angela Guillory, and Director of Colonies and Chapters, Meaghan Miller Thul. By the end of convention the Sigma Kappa Foundation raised nearly $225,000 with our own District 3 raising the most money! Two accomplished women were initiated into the mystic bond; professional golfer, Nancy Lopez, and philanthropist, Kay Malone. These inspiring women make perfect additions to the ranks of our Sigma Kappa sisterhood. Later that evening we all celebrated sisterhood at the famous Confirmed Conventionite Celebration with the Texas appropriate theme of Denim, Diamonds and Divas. Some national officers/volunteers dressed as the five founders complete with period clothing. It was a real treat to see the creativity of our sisters expressed in some fantastic outfits. Excitement was high at the Inspiring Leaders, Inspiring Us Achievement Banquet when our sister collegiate chapter, Zeta Mu, was awarded the One Star Standards of Excellence. They worked very hard last year to earn this honor and we are so proud of them. They also received the Sigma Kappa Foundation Silver Circle Award for their Ultra Violet event, Sigma Kappa’s Best Dance Crew. Before I left for convention, I was given some wonderful words of advice from a wise “big sister”, Carol Winter, Gamma Kappa. She told me that convention will bring home the scope of Sigma Kappa, both collegiate and alumnae. Truer words could not have been spoken. I encourage you all to attend at least one convention in your lifetime. The next convention will be in Las Vegas in 2014!
Love, C
