In November I attended the initiation of Zeta Mu's fall new member class. I haven't attended an initiation ceremony since my last year as a collegiate member and I realized my ritual dresses had long since found their way to the Goodwill. How in the world was I going to find a white dress in November? The Friday before initiation, I ran to the mall in a white-dress-finding frenzy. I scoured the stores until I found a tasteful dress buried in a clearance rack. It was 3 sizes too big but I had run out of options and at a mere 25 dollars it was a steal from the regular price of 200. In true Tim Gunn fashion I was determined to "make it work". Some simple stitching, double sided tape, a white sash and voila! I had something that hopefully didn't look like a white trash bag and wouldn't flash anyone. I wore my reworked dress to initiation and I was grateful for the last minute find.
Pictured at the top are me and my little-little sis, Leanne, on her initiation day. I wish I still had that white dress; I loved it. We have such joyful looks on our faces, making this one of my favorite sorority photos. Initiation was always a time to reflect on the reasons I joined and continued to give my energy to the chapter. It was a treat to be able to share this special day with Zeta Mu and their 2011 fall new member class. We were also fortunate to have Madison Alexander (District 3 Recruitment Coordinator Manager) join us to see her sister, Lexington, initiated. I love how our ritual is a timeless string that binds us together no matter what chapter or decade we joined Sigma Kappa.
On January 23 we will be holding a formal chapter meeting and executive council elections for members of the La Jolla Alumnae Chapter. If you are like me and haven't had a taste of ritual in a while, it will be a great reminder of the ties that bind us. Don't worry; badge attire only - no white dresses or white pantyhose required. We hope you will dust off that badge and join us.
